Approval translates political data into textile form. Twelve panels depict pie charts of Presidential approval, disapproval, and uncertainty in the first 100 days of office. By rendering statistical graphics in crochet, the work reimagines the language of data visualization through a domestic, traditionally feminized medium, inviting reflection on power, perception, and representation.

Project 2025 is the policy wish list for the next Republican president. It includes proposals that further restrict the rights of women and LGBTQ people, roll back climate initiatives, and give the president dictator-levels of power, just to name a few.

One of the proposals that stuck out to me was a list of words and phrases that are to be censored from government:
“The next conservative President must make the institutions of American civil society hard targets for woke culture warriors. This starts with deleting the terms sexual orientation and gender identity (“SOGI”), diversity, equity, and inclusion, gender, gender equality, gender equity, gender awareness, gender sensitive, abortion, reproductive health, reproductive rights, and any other term used to deprive Americans of their First Amendment rights out of every federal rule, agency regulation, contract, grant, regulation, and piece of legislation that exists.”

This artwork takes those words and immortalizes them in cross stitch embroidery, signifying the work it took to have these definitions represented in government and what's at stake if Republicans regain leadership.

Women’s Work is a reaction to the discrimination that women, notably women of color, continue to face in both the workforce and at home. Cross stitch, a form of art that tends to be labeled as kitsch and a women’s hobby craft, is intentionally utilized to emphasize the fact that women’s labor is routinely dismissed and undervalued.

In 2020, a report by The Commonwealth Fund revealed that the maternal death rate was 62% higher in 26 states that currently impose bans or stringent restrictions on abortion access compared to the 24 states with more accessible abortion services. States with prohibitive abortion measures displayed poorer overall health outcomes for women of reproductive age. From 2018 to 2020, the death rates for women aged 15 to 44 were 34% higher in states with increased abortion restrictions. A report from the Gender Equity Policy Institute disclosed that women in states with abortion bans face an almost threefold increased likelihood of mortality during pregnancy, childbirth, or shortly after delivery.
I wanted to shed light on this data by taking a familiar form, a baby blanket, and remix it to communicate this surprising and disturbing information.
